COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Have a problem but not sure where to get help? A solution may be just a 3 buttons away, Call 2-1-1!
2-1-1 is an information and referral line that can be reached by call or text 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 2-1-1 directs users to resources for utility assistance, tax preparation, domestic violence, housing, shelter, healthcare and more.
The service is completely free and run by the nonprofit organization United Way.
“Most of the calls that we get are for basic needs types of situations, but we get calls for domestic violence, we get calls for human trafficking, we get suicide calls- People that are in dire straits. We can help connect them to the resources that can truly transform their lives,” said Candace Poole, local 2-1-1 Coordinator.
Since its inception in 2014, 2-1-1 has answered over 25,000 requests and given nearly 82,000 referrals.
Columbus resident Arthur Moton is a supporter of the service. He lost everything in a house fire and says if it weren’t for United Way’s 2-1-1, he would be homeless.
“I had run out of money and I was just destitute. They stepped in like angels, worked with me, and made me whole again,” said Moton
Unsure where to look and living on a fixed income, Moton says he’s thankful for the helpful referrals and services they were able to find for him.
“You can’t go wrong if you call that number, believe me” said 2-1-1 user Arthur Moton.
