Fort Benning gears up for Best Ranger Competition

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - Fort Benning is currently prepping to host one of the world’s toughest contests. The 37th Annual Best Ranger competition is only 3 days away!

The Best Ranger Competition was started in 1982 when Dick Leandri decided to start them as a way to honor his personal friend, Lieutenant General David E. Grange, Jr.

Today, the games are a fierce competition of skill, intelligence, and athleticism.

Teams compete in many military-like tasks including weapons test, searches, endurance tests, swims, obstacle courses, and plenty of other physical competitions.

In all, they will have completed more than 65 miles on foot in three days.

Combine that with a lack of sleep or food and leaders say it all boils down to one thing: determination.

This year there will be more than 50 two-man teams from around the world competing for the title.

Today teams lined up for their photos and packed the bags that they will be taking with them on the competition.

The event ties into Ft. Benning’s annual infantry week and officially starts on Friday, April 13th.
