ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A man died after a car fell on him Friday morning, according to Michael Fowler, Dougherty County coroner.
Wantonio Tolbert, 47, died after the car fell on him at an East Albany automotive shop in the 3000 block of Sylvester Road, Fowler said.
The man was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Fowler.
The incident happened around 10:15 a.m.
Dougherty County Police Department is handling the case.
Dougherty County Police investigator said a car slipped off a jack stand and that’s when it collapsed. He said Wantonio Tolbert was working on that car before it happened.
DCP said the owner of EBAD Automotive Shop walked out of the shop and saw a jack under a vehicle and immediately walked over and saw that the jack had slipped and that’s when the car fell.
The owner told DCP, he felt the man had been under the car for up to 45 minutes.
Loved ones of Tolbert mourn his death tonight, after police said he was killed while working on a car at EBAD Automotive Shop in East Albany.
A woman who came to shop to buy a car said it’s unfortunate this tragedy happened, but now she hopes more car shop owners will push for more preventive measures.
“There should be some kind of preventive measures taken so that kind of thing doesn’t happened. There should be other people around, extra support under a vehicle. Even an extra guy going around checking making sure nothing like that will happened,” said Dana Lloyd, car shopper of EBAD Automotive Shop.
Again, this incident is still under investigation. We do not know how many people were outside of this location at the time of this incident.
We did speak with the owner of EBAD Automotive Shop, who was very upset over the sudden tragedy.
As soon we find out more details, we will release it once it’s available.
