COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - With Earth Day coming up in just a couple days, the Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission is doing their part to help take care of the planet by hosting two special events on Saturday.
The Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission says the purpose of the events was to engage and educate people to be good stewards of the earth.
The first event was the 7th annual personal paper shredding day. This allows people to safely get rid of documents and protect their identities while also helping the environment by recycling.
Organizers say the goal this year was to match the 10 tons of paper they received during last year’s event.
Today was also the first ever city-wide cleanup. Participants went around the city picking up trash and litter. 19 local groups, businesses and individuals all registered to help with the clean up day.
The Keep Columbus Beautiful Commission says it hopes people all over the city will continue to cleanup the community and take care of the planet- not just around the time of Earth Day, but always.
