Columbus police not pressing charges against dump truck driver in tragic Broadway accident

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The driver of a dump truck involved in a tragic accident that claimed the life of a beloved CSU employee will not be facing vehicular homicide charges.

Lieutenant Lance Deaton with the Columbus Police Department said that their investigation found that W.D. Feeney, the wheelchair-bound man killed in the accident, entered the crosswalk illegally and the driver of the Joe Ryan Enterprises dump truck did not see him.

Feeney reportedly entered the crosswalk during an eight-second countdown prior to the hand telling pedestrians not to cross the road.

Lt. Deaton says without a doubt in his mind, if the driver had seen him in the crosswalk, he would not have driven off.

The driver was issued two traffic citations unrelated to the accident. One was for the weight of the truck coming across the Dillingham Bridge and the second for being stopped over the stop bar.
