ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Tax commissioners want to prepare South Georgians for a new tag registration system that will be implemented statewide in a just over a month.
“Georgia Drives” will be taking over the current system on Tuesday, May 28.
For the upgrade, all vehicle registration and titling services will be unavailable statewide from Friday, May 24 to Monday, May 27.
- Beginning May 21, some county tag and motor vehicle office hours may be reduced in preparation for the system upgrade.
- Tag renewals and other vehicle transactions are encouraged before the system upgrade to avoid delays.
- If a renewal is planned for June, allow extra time to process tag renewals.
- The Department of Driver Services will not be affected.
Representatives from the Motor Vehicle Division of the Georgia Department of Revenue said if your birthday is in May or June, you should renew your vehicle tags before May 20.
This new system will have additional services and cut down the lines in the tag office.
“So what we want customers to know is we are doing this to prepare for our future. Get us on a great technological infrastructure, prepare for the future, but renew early. If your birthday is in May or June renew early so we can get you in and out of the tag office quickly,” said Georgia Steele, the Director of Motor Vehicles Division with the GA Department of Revenue.
Drivers licenses will not be impacted by this change.
Steele said if you don’t renew before May 20, you may be in the tag office lines longer.
