COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Columbus police have identified the victim of a shooting that took place on Hamilton Rd. and 33rd St.
Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan says 33-year-old Kimberly Tarver was killed with at least one gunshot wound.
According to Columbus police, someone knocked on the doors of the fire station on 33rd St. next to the park telling them about a shooting.
People in the neighborhood say incidents like this make it difficult to enjoy a place that is supposed to fun.
“It’s hard to come to the park," said neighbor Melissa Lake. "It’s a lot of gang violence and stuff, and you have to be really careful, you could be quickly mistaken for somebody else or just be at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
“It’s not safe for the kids to come out here," said neighbor Janie Cunningham, "because I want to let my grand baby come out here, when he come, I’m going to be with him.”
Earlier the same morning, a homicide occurred on Illges Rd. in Columbus. Police have not confirmed if the two events are related.
This is the tenth homicide of the year in Columbus.
“We are right-on line like we have been for the last seven years," said Bryan. "We average about three a month, 36 to 44 a year, so right now we’re at number 10, still in the first quarter, basically.”
