The announcement was made during a gala at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center. More than 1,100 teachers and community leaders were in attendance.

The selection committee was impressed with Irvin’s connection with her students.

“Dacia has a unique way of connecting with her students,” commented Tom Hacket, selection committee chair. “Her classroom was thrilling and her passion for these kids was palpable. It was hard to get the committee to leave her classroom. Dacia makes sure every student who comes into her classroom knows they are cared for and held to a high standard. She uses role models in her life and how they shaped her to help shape her students’ lives.”
