MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - It’s National Skilled Nursing Care Week. It used to be known as National Nursing Home Week, one of the most important events of the year for nursing homes. It recognizes the role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities.
Gov. Kay Ivey declared this week skilled nursing care week. It’s been recognized on a nation-wide since 1967. In Alabama, nursing homes employ more than 31,000 people. There is at least one nursing home in each county, and on any given day, about 24,000 people in Alabama are receiving care in an Alabama nursing home.
This year’s theme for the week, “Live Soulfully”, celebrates skilled nursing centers, their residents and staff by showcasing how they achieve happy minds and healthy souls. Centers are encouraged to participate this week by hosting activities that display how they “Live Soulfully” and share their stories and experiences on social media.
National Skilled Nursing Care Week starts every year on Mother’s Day and runs through the following Saturday.
