COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - During a Columbus City Council budget session, the Muscogee County Sheriff asked the council to consider combining the sheriff’s and marshal offices.
Sheriff Donna Tompkins is proposing to eliminate the Marshal’s office. She said 2020 is the perfect year to put this proposal on the ballot because the current Muscogee County Marshal is not seeking reelection, so voters would not have to vote out an incumbent.
One benefit could include cost savings to the city.
"What we're facing in Columbus is pay compression,” said Tompkins. “We keep raising the starting salary but the other salaries are not keeping up. So, I think that's becoming a really serious issue and I'm asking them to look at a comprehensive analysis of those things."
Tompkins said she wants the analysis to look at duties of each agency to address pay issues.
She is also asking for a 2.5 percent salary increase for sergeants, captains, and lieutenants to begin the process.
