COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A pre-k student at Eagle Ridge Academy was awarded a college scholarship on Thursday.

Blakely Gasser received a $1,529 toward college savings. The 2019 Path from Pre-k College Sweepstakes, which is held across the state, is designed to help raise awareness about the importance of saving for college.

"It’s critical to get the word out so they can start saving for college,” said Mitch Seabaugh, executive director of Path2College 529 Plan. “It changes the mindset of that student looking to go to college so they can get the degree to help get the job. So, when I have an opportunity to go and meet new people and talk about the plan and give a chance for a winner to have a college savings plan at such a young age, it is absolutely thrilling,"

The program was started two years go.
