COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The Northside Patriots swept the Denmark Danes 7-6 and 11-2 on Wednesday night to claim the GHSA Class 4A state baseball title. The games were played at State Mutual Stadium in Rome.
The Patriots (32-8) came back from a 5-1 deficit in the opener. Walt McConnell’s bases clearing double in the fourth capped a 4-run inning and tied the game at 5-5. Denmark (21-19) scored in the top of the fifth to retake the lead, but Northside came through in the bottom of the seventh. Spencer Chandler’s sacrifice fly tied the game. Justin Veloz hit a fly ball that left fielder Gray Wilson could not handle, which allowed Mack Williams to score the game winning run.
Game two was never in doubt. The Patriots scored twice in the first inning, and added four more in the third and again in the sixth to blow the game open.
Connor Sizemore went the distance on the mound, tossing a 5-hitter and striking out six.
The state title is the first in program history for Northside baseball.
