COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A house fire in the 1500 block of 15th Ave. in the Lakebottom area of Columbus is being investigated as an arson, according to Fire Chief Ricky Shores.

Battalion Chief Keith Watson says they arrived on scene at approximately 2:00 a.m. to find the house fire fully involved. He says it took crews about 20 minutes to put out the fire.

“When I arrived on the scene and actually seen the many firetrucks and police personnel and everything, and then I saw the flames, I would say over 100 foot high, and it all kicked in that everything was gone. I just can’t describe it," said homeowner Jonathan Whitehead.

Battalion Chief Watson says the home was vacant and no injuries have been reported at this time. He says the home is a total loss.

“The biggest memory I have of this house, before it was our house, it was my granny’s house. My grandmother was a big part of my life and this was one thing, like the only thing, that she left behind and we tried our best to take care of it and that memory is just ashes," said Whitehead.
