COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Two south Columbus residents are extra thankful for smoke detectors the day after Thanksgiving.
A fire engulfed their home in the 3200 block of Glenn St. at approximately 8:30 a.m.
Travis Rogers said the only reason he and the other person who lives there woke up is because of the smoke detectors.
“We just barely made it out with our lives this morning," Rogers said. "I’m just thankful for smoke detectors. I hope you guys keep fresh batteries in your smoke detectors, it will definitely save your life. I know without that I wouldn’t be here right now.”
The home has been declared a total loss. Rogers said they did not have time to gather any belongings before exiting their home.
Neighbors have provided clothes and the Red Cross is expected to come help where they can.
Columbus Fire and EMS are still working to determine the cause of the fire. No injuries were sustained in the fire.
