COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A man is in custody after reportedly threatening customers while armed with a knife inside the Walmart Supercenter on Whittlesey Blvd. Saturday afternoon. Capt. Ronnie Hastings with the Columbus Police Department says 23-year-old Leo Ricardo Segura faces the following seven charges in regards to the incident:
· Terroristic Threats (Felony)
· Possession of a Knife during the Commission of a Crime (Felony)
· Reckless Conduct (Misdemeanor)
· Disorderly Conduct (City Ordinance)
· Aggravated Assault (Felony)
· Theft by Shoplifting (Felony)
· Obstruction of Police Officers (Felony)
Police say witnesses reported that a man armed with a knife, later identified as Segura, was threatening customers inside the Walmart in north Columbus just after 4:00PM. Before officers arrived to the scene, Capt. Hastings says they received additional information from witnesses stating that the armed suspect had fled from Walmart and was being pursued by others.
Police say a witness in the Walmart parking lot, who was lawfully armed with a firearm, tried to stop the suspect, but was unsuccessful. A second witness, also lawfully armed with a firearm, saw the fleeing suspect pulling on the driver’s door handles of vehicles in the Walmart parking lot, including his own vehicle. Police say this witness confronted the suspect and pointed his firearm at him.
Capt. Hastings says the armed suspect then fled on foot again across Whittlesey Blvd. into the parking lot of Columbus Park Crossing between Olive Garden and Barnes & Noble. He was then taken into custody.
Walmart management told police they had seen the suspect several times in the store in the past few days. They also reported that the suspect had slept in a vehicle in the parking lot the past few nights.
Segura is scheduled to appear in Recorder’s Court on Monday, December 16 at 2:00PM.
