Georgia Power contract worker dies after drowning at Oliver Dam near Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - A Georgia Power contract worker died Tuesday afternoon after drowning near Oliver Dam.

31-year-old Alex Paxton of Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina was pronounced dead at 2:40 p.m. at the Piedmont Columbus Regional emergency room.

Paxton was a scuba diver working for Georgia Power at the dam. He worked with Georgia Power for 12 years.

Georgia Power released the following statement regarding the drowning:

This afternoon, Georgia Power was notified that a contract worker doing underwater work for the company at Oliver Dam, near Columbus, had to be rescued and transported to an area hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with the individual and their family at this time. Georgia Power is working with the contract company and authorities to determine the cause.
