EAST ALABAMA (WTVM) - East Alabama communities celebrated and honored their veterans Wednesday either virtually or in person.
The City of Opelika held a gratitude week for veterans complete with a virtual program held virtually to honor those who served the country. The virtual program included a slideshow honoring local veterans, remarks from Mayor Gary Fuller, and special music from students in Opelika City Schools.
In Valley, some residents braved the rain for an outdoor ceremony at Veterans Park. the ceremony was hosted by American Legion 67. Speakers discussed the brave service of those who served our country.
“Each member of any of the branches of service that made it back, a part of them did die," said Samuel Newton with American Legion 67. "This day and Memorial Day are set aside for those that served. It’s a way of honoring those vets.”
According to Newton, the Valley area lost 72 men in World War II, 11 while fighting in Korea, and 12 died in Vietnam.
He said it’s important to remember these men, but also honor the men and women serving today.
