COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - The Columbus State women’s basketball team’s season has been delayed once again. The Augusta Lady Jaguars are having COVID issues, resulting in the postponement of the game originally scheduled for Wednesday night. No makeup date has been set.
The schedule change was announced Monday afternoon. The men’s basketball team will play Augusta on Wednesday, with the tipoff time at the Lumpkin Center moved up to 5:30 pm ET.
The delay isn’t necessarily unwelcome, since the Lady Cougars held their first full-team practice since the Christmas break on Monday.
“Actually, there wasn’t really a big reaction,” said head basketball coach Matt Houser. “We’ve been planning about that happening, that’s the reality of it. I think because we didn’t start in November, December. Especially watching the division one teams, seeing so many games cancelled or postponed because of contact tracing and COVID.”
“A little downfall, but I’m kind of glad it got cancelled,” junior guard Jurnee Smith said.” Now we have more time to prepare. Get all of our oohs and ahhs and nervousness out.”
The CSU women will now open the season on the road at UNC Pembroke on Saturday at 1:30 pm ET, in the first game of a doubleheader with the men’s game to follow.
