DA talks gang activity and violent crime in the Columbus community

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Gang activity is being brought back into the spotlight in Columbus.

A 19-year-old woman already in jail charged with murder now faces a second murder charge in the death of 17-year-old Destiny Nelson.

Keyonna James has been in jail since she was 15 years old. District Attorney Mark Jones says he wants to focus on violent crimes like Nelson’s murder.

“I don’t hate gangs, what I hate is the violence they do in our community,” said Jones. “You are not a law into yourselves. I support people’s freedom of association, what they want to wear, how they want to display things. What I have a problem with is when it leads to harm in the community, then you have a family like Destiny’s where you have her four-year-old sister in court today wondering where her sister is.”

Jones says they are expecting to land a major indictment Friday on a criminal street gang case. More on the case is to be released in the coming days.
