COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - It was a split decision at the Lumpkin Center in Columbus State’s basketball home opener. The Cougars beat Clayton State Lakers 89-66, while the Lady Cougars lost to the Lady Lakers 75-67.
The Cougars (1-1) never trailed, opening with an 11-3 run. Kalen Clifton led all scorers with 20 points, while Hunter Preston added 13, and Anthony Moore and Christian Chambers each had 12. Justin Figueroa led Clayton State (0-3) with 18.
The Lady Cougars (1-1) opened a six-point lead in the first half, but a Clayton State (2-1) run gave the Lady Lakers a 33-30 lead at halftime, a lead that expanded to 12 in the fourth quarter before a CSU comeback effort that cut it to three in the final minutes.
Former CVCC Pirate Audrey McElhaney led all scorers with 25 points to lead Clayton State. Emelia Tenbrock’s 15 points led the Lady Cougars.
