COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Nearly two years after Northside won the GHSA 4-A State Championship, the Patriots are gearing up for their first full season since the title.

Monday was the official start of high school baseball in Georgia.

“We had our season taken away last year. It really broke our hearts, especially for the seniors,” said Northside senior catcher Conner O’Neal. “We hope to get back out here and play as hard as we can. Hopefully, bring back home another championship.”

O’Neal is among the Patriots’ group of talented returners. The program had 20 players who lost their senior season last spring.

On top of the new protocols, the Patriots will be getting used to new head coach Craig Garner, who left the Troup County program for the Northside job.

“I’m excited to be with them. These guys, this coaching staff. I think it’s a great group and we’re going to see what we can do to add to it,” Garner said.

Northside is scheduled to open its season on February 16 at home vs. Smiths Station.
