Opelika citizens join together for initiative to help small businesses

OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM) - Citizens in Opelika joined together in a creative way to help local businesses through a Facebook group called Opelika Cash Mob.

According to the creator of the page, each month, one local, small business is chosen. Everyone visits the business on a specific day and spends at least $20. The idea is for the business to be be flooded with patrons and ultimately money.

This past weekend was the first event for the group. They all visited O Town Ice Cream on 2nd Avenue.

“I love Opelika, I love living here, and I really love that there are so many locally owned, small businesses and they give back to the community,” said Rosanna McGinnis, creator of Opelika Cash Mob. “And that one day increase in sales can help pay their mortgage, pay their employees, pay taxes.”

For February, Twice Baked is the chosen business the cash mob plans to visit.
