Phenix City pastor speaks out against violence in the community

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (WTVM) - The death of a 32-year-old man happened near one Phenix City pastor’s church over the weekend.

Reverend Nathaniel Copeland of Gaines Chapel AME Church says the senseless killings have to stop.

According to Copeland, several shootings have happened around the area of Dillingham Street in Phenix City. He wants to see everyone in the city of Columbus and Phenix City come together to fix the issue of crime in the Chattahoochee Valley.

“There’s a sense of fear. One person said, I’m scared to put my grand daughter in the car and go down the street two minutes to my mothers house. It’s no longer about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. It seems like everywhere is the wrong place,” said Copeland.

Copeland says the community has to intervene in the lives of people who are committing violent crimes. Members of his congregation have a sense of fear and anxiety. He wants city leaders to reassure the community that the Chattahoochee Valley is safe.
