COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – An execution timeline has been set for the so-called "stocking strangler". It appears Carlton Gary will face death by lethal injection within the next 20 days.
Judge Robert Johnston signed the order Thursday morning. Gary is the man on death row, convicted of murdering three Columbus women in the 1970s.
He was convicted in 1986, and has been on death row -- fighting through numerous appeals.
Thursday's order comes after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Monday that denied an appeal on that level.
This ruling provides a range of dates for which Gary can be executed.
Thursday morning, we obtained a copy of the death warrant. It states that Carlton Gary will be executed between the dates of December 16-23, 2009. Click here to see the death warrant.
The seven-day time range will give Gary's attorney time to have one final appeal with the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles.
If the appeal is denied, a final date of execution will be issued through the Georgia Department of Corrections.
