COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - Memorial Day is all about saying thank you to the service men and women who have made sacrifices for our country.  That is exactly what crowds of people were doing today by dedicating more than 200 engraved bricks to their loved ones who served or are serving in the military.  Family or friends can purchase a paver in advance and then have a special message engraved on the brick as a symbol of respect.

Patti Bedford purchased a paver to honor 3 generations of servicemen she loves.  Her father-in-law served in the Army in World War II.  Her husband served 20 years in the Air Force, and their son is currently serving as an Army Captain stationed at Fort Benning.

"It is a way for me to say thank you and something that thousands of other people can see.  It's not just a onetime thing.  It is something permanent to be here," said Bedford.

For Bedford's son, Captain Lloyd E. Bedford III, seeing his name next to his childhood heroes, his grandfather and father, is an honor.

"Every little boy grows up seeing soldiers wanting to be a soldier, but it's a little bit more when your granddad or dad is a soldier or service member.  It's like you get to see it firsthand you know.  So, it's not only do they get to mentor you but you get to see what you want to be when you grow up," said Bedford.

Now, all 3 Bedfords join the ranks of those permanently remembered for making our country the home of the brave.
