OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) - Roderick and Miyoshi Marshall, along with their two sons, will receive the ultimate Christmas gift by becoming new homeowners as the Lee County Habitat for Humanity's 56th home is dedicated to them Tuesday morning.

"It's just a blessing this time of the year, Christmas time, I think this is going to be the best Christmas we've ever had," explains Miyoshi Marshall.

This habitat story is a little unique.

The home was sponsored and built by Geordan Communities Builder, and in just two weeks they made the Marshall's dream of home ownership a reality.

"I had the idea that we would find local habitat affiliate and I said why don't we just as a company go out and volunteer for a week or two. So I go to our owner and tell him my idea to which he quickly responded why don't you find that local habitat affiliate and let's build them a house," says Joe Tessin of Geordan Communities Builders.

Executive Director of the Lee County Habitat for Humanity, Mark Grantham, and his team have been servicing Lee County for over 20 years. He explained how it does take a lot of hard work and dedication to be a part of this program.

"This is the 56th home that we've been able to partner with others in the community and build so we are just so thankful for all those through the years that have been involved and supported us," says.

Qualified families are selected based on three criteria, the ability to partner, ability to pay and need.

Families must volunteer 500 sweat equity hours to the program and save a down payment. Also, homeowners pay a nonprofit, no interest mortgage.

"This is a gift. We would not have been able to service this family till probably late next year," says Grantham.

And a gift the Marshall's could not be more grateful for.

"It has changed our lives and we are just so grateful to habitat and Georgian home builders and it's just wonderful and so exciting," explains Miyoshi.
