(WTVM) - Postal workers are speaking out against stopping Saturday mail delivery.

Five-day mail weeks will begin later this year in an effort to save money. Letter carriers rallying in Alabama and Georgia over the weekend, say if Congress would lift a mandate that forces them to pay into the pension system each year, they wouldn't have to cut back.

One person says six days of mail a week is in the constitution and it's wrong to bring an end to that.

"It would hurt the rural communities, elderly, small business owners as well as the postal service," said Antonia Shields with the National Association of Letter Carriers. "It's wrong for all entities."

The new controversial schedule is set to begin in August.
