Man indicted for attempted murder of Lanett police officer

CHAMBERS COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - A Chambers County grand jury has indicted Jarod Moreland for Attempted Capital Murder of a Lanett police officer.

Per Lanett Police Chief Angie Spates, in August of 2013, Moreland allegedly took police on a chase, and they were able to stop him.

One officer got out to approach Moreland's vehicle when police say Moreland sped towards him. The officer then shot the suspect, but Moreland did not stop. He drove to a nearby housing project, and a resident told police that a man inside was shot.

Moreland was airlifted to a Columbus area hospital, and soon arrested on an existing warrant. He was formally charged with Attempted Capital Murder on Sept. 12, and was arraigned this week.

Moreland was denied bond on the murder charge, and given a $10,000 bond for unlawful distribution. He was also charged with various traffic violations, and is expected back in court on Nov. 3.
