Annual Ft Benning Oktoberfest Celebration free, open to public

FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - You can throw back a beer, bigdeal. Can you throw a whole keg?

This year's Oktoberfest at Fort Benning'sUchee Creek will feature a keg tossing competition, a Dachshund Derby and steinhoisting contests. So when your dogs get tired, take a break and raise a glassof your favorite German brew … and hold it there just as long as you can.

This event is free and open tothe public. German food and beverages will be available for purchase.

The fun starts at 4 p.m. Friday,Oct 24, and ends at 10:30 p.m. The day includes lots of free fun for the kids,with inflatables and a petting zoo, and fun for adults with a ceremonial kegtapping at 6 p.m., music by the Sonnenschein Express and German yodelers, steinhoisting contests, and more.

Saturday starts with theCommander's Challenge, which includes the annual Oktoberfest 10K Cross Country Run, a5K run and a 5K Volksmarch. These events start at 8 a.m. at Uchee Creek. (TheVolksmarch is free and stroller friendly.) Register for the 10K for $25 atSmith Fitness Center or Oct 22, the fee increase to $35.

Saturday events also includecanine competitions (the Dachshund Derby, Best Dressed, Doggie Doppelgangersand Top Dog trick); hay rides, pony rides, Staples Safari Zoo, inflatables,crafts, boat rides and pumpkin patch for the kids; a keg tossing competition,dancing and more music by the Sonnenschein Express, yodelers and the MCoE Band.We tap out at 10 p.m.

Sunday activities take place from10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and include performances by the SKIES Cheer Team, music, hayrides, pony rides, the Staples Safari Zoo, and more children's activities.

A shuttle service will beavailable to and from Oktoberfest on post.

Vendors accept only tokens for the purchaseof food. Rides and games are free. Tokens are $1 each and are available beforethe event at MWR headquarters, Building 2783 on Eckel Avenue, or at tokentrailers on site. Unused tokens can be redeemed on site for full value.
