Girls Inc. of Columbus and Phenix-Russell honor veterans
COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Girls Inc. of Columbus and Phenix-Russell held their annual jump rope competition today, November 11, at the Baker Center just off Victory Drive in Columbus. It was a competition but they also used the occasion to honor our veterans.
The competition is held on Veterans Day every year as a special tribute to veterans. The girls also made banners and posters.
"We perform for them every year on Veterans Day to thank them and to show that we appreciate them very much for what they do and the sacrifices they made for the United States," says Yvonne Mitchell, the team co-captain.
Parents of some of the girls who participated are active duty members of the military.
Along with the annual Veterans Day tribute, some of the girls also compete in the Amateur Athletic Union Junior Olympics every year. The jump rope program is part of Girls Inc's Sports and Adventure program.
