COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Investigators say a man was found dead with a gunshot wound around 11:47 p.m. Wednesday.
Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley confirms the victim is 32-year-old Chad Herring.
Officers were patrolling the area of Buena Vista Road and Roosevelt Street, in the area of Brewer Elementary School and George Washington Carver High School, when they noticed a vehicle at the end of the dead-end street. Officers checked the vehicle and discovered the victim.
EMS was called out to the scene. Worley was also called out and pronounced Herring dead at the scene at 12:26 a.m.
Herring was found in the passenger seat of a silver Chevy Impala. Columbus Police have taken the car for evidence and will process the car Thursday.
Investigators tell us the owner of the car is not a suspect in the case and it's not clear who was driving the car.
Police are investigating this as a homicide. Herring's body will be taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Atlanta on Friday, for an autopsy.
