FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - The Christmas spirit filled the air Tuesday at Fort Benning.
Post officials hosted the annual Christmas tree and menorah lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the field of the Four Chaplains.
Faith Middle School Band and chorus and the Army band entertained the crowd with Christmas carols.
The Garrison Chaplin explained the meaning of the event.
"It's just an opportunity once again for us as a community on Ft. Benning to get together and be together and I think secondly it's important because it's a way for us to celebrate two major religions that compose a significant number of people in our military and to do it in a public way and to be thankful that we have that opportunity in this free country," said Chaplin Darren Chester.
Hundreds attended the ceremony and got the chance to mingle with the event's special guest Santa Claus.
