LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones says around 10:50 a.m. Sunday, 911 dispatchers received a call of a hunter who was found unresponsive at the base of a tree.

When investigators arrived they found 54-year-old John Hopper, of Decatur, AL at the base of the tree.

Hopper was discovered by a friend who was hunting in another location along Lee Road 144 and Lee Road 140 in the Salem community.

The friend got concerned when Mr. Hopper did not return his text messages, so he went to check on him and found him on the ground.

Hopper was pronounced dead at the scene. It appears he fell 25 feet from his tree stand.

The Department of Natural Resources is helping the Lee County Sheriff's office investigate.

At this point, Sheriff Jay Jones says it appears to be a tragic accident.
