Proposed merger for Georgia State and Georgia Perimeter

ATLANTA (WTVM) – The University System of Georgia's Board of Regents have announced that Georgia State University and Georgia Perimeter College will merge, according to a news release published Tuesday.

The new institution will be named Georgia State University, and Chancellor Hank Huckaby tells the USG this consolidation will improve student success. Georgia State President Mark Becker will serve as the president of the newly-formed institution.

Enrollment for this fall semester for both institutions is 53,927. According to the USG, the timeline calls for approval of the plan by the board of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College by the end of this year, followed by approval from the Board of Regents in early 2016.

An implementation team will soon be formed with representatives from both institutions will work out the many details associated with consolidating the two universities. The implementation team will also be responsible for submitting the required documents for accreditation.

This merger would make Georgia State University the largest university in the state.
