COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Some folks in Columbus got together tonight, January 15, at the Liberty Theater to raise money to help keep young people off the streets and out of gangs.
The "We Dream Teen" task force is looking to renovate their opportunity center for teens. The group is a safe, accessible alternative to gangs and offers many of the same benefits of gang affiliation. Some of the benefits include protection and social support, elevated status, the chance to acquire power through leadership, opportunities for excitement and a family environment.
"What I want everyone to know is that we all need to work together and improve together. To get this community where it needs to be because it is our problem, it is not just your leadership in Columbus but it's our problem," says facilitator Wulonea Kent.
The group also offers free tutoring, mentoring and apprenticeship opportunities.
