CDC: Flu cases down, still above epidemic levels

(WTVM) - Flu season is still here, and influenza can affect people differently.

Even healthy people can get very sick from the flu and spread it to others.

In a

, flu cases are trending down. However, for the week ending Jan. 17, based on pneumonia and influenza mortality surveillance, the season is above epidemic levels.

Forty-four states reported widespread flu activity and 23 states reported high activity levels. Georgia and Alabama were in widespread but are now in regional.

There were 11 new pediatric deaths reported last week, bringing the total number for the season to 56.

The CDC says the best defense is still the flu vaccine. Everyone six months and older is recommended for an annual vaccine.
