FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) - A memorial service for a Fort Benning Ranger was held on Wednesday.
Staff Sgt. Eric Sly was a member of Bravo Company and the first battalion the 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
News Leader 9's Jenyne Donaldson was live from the Infantry Chapel on Fort Benning where more than a hundred people attended Staff Sgt. Eric Sly's memorial service.
Remarks were given by the battalion commander, company commander, and a soldiers' tribute was also given.
A reoccurring theme was his bravery and commitment not only to his country, but to those he came in contact with and his outgoing personality and caring demeanor. Although it was a sad occasion some of the stories told about the staff sergeant caused the chapel to erupt in laughter.
The staff sergeant trained airborne students and was highly respected. Sadly he died from a heart attack last week.
He earned a host of medals, badges, and ribbons including the coveted black hat.
Thank you for your service Sgt. Sly.
