Identity theft task force created for Columbus area

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The city of Columbus received a not-so-prestigious honor in 2013 when it was named the number two location in the country for stolen identity affidavits filed with the FTC.

Local authorities in partnership with federal law enforcement agencies announced the creation of an identity theft task force for the area on Monday, April 13.

Authorities say there has been an increase in theft of personal identifying information from several large employers from around the Columbus area, as well as stolen U.S. treasury checks being cashed at local banks.

The task force is a joint venture between several federal agencies such as the IRS and U.S. Attorney's Office, and the Harris County Sheriff and Columbus Police Departments.
