MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA (WTVM) - The Muscogee County School District announced the big winner Thursday night of its annual Teacher of the Year award.
Sheryl Green, a teacher at Jordan High School, was named the 2015 MCSD Teacher of the Year before a crowd of 875 teachers and community leaders.
Green teaches dual enrollment classes in English and literature, whose credits are also accepted as college credit by Columbus Technical College.
Every student in her class is on track to receive those credits.
"Our mission with the Muscogee Educational Excellence Foundation is to recognize and reward outstanding teachers," said Marquette McKnight with the Muscogee Educational Excellence Foundation. "It is a wonderful way our community says thank you for what you do every day for our students in our public schools."
Green was chosen from 56 original nominees.
We caught up with Green on Friday, and she spoke with us about how she gets her students to learn.
"Balancing high expectations with the tools to get there," Green said. "Balancing being stern with being compassionate. So I think balance, if I were to sum up my philosophy in one word, that's the one it would be."
She will receive $5,000 for winning the award and will be featured on a billboard.
