COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Local leaders and law enforcement had a special event Friday night to remember fellow officers.
The flags are at half-staff at some local buildings like the Government Center, the site of the memorial, organized by the Columbus Fraternal Order of Police.
Family and friends of officers killed in the line of duty came to pay their respects to those who gave their lives.
"These men and women are regular people just like you and I," said Brad Hicks, 2nd Vice President of FOP. "They put on a uniform every day, make sure everybody lives in safe environment, and end of the day this is our respect to them."
Local leaders also read the names of those lost in Georgia and Alabama.
Last year, 127 peace officers gave their lives in the line of duty nationwide. In 2013, that number was 105.
