AUBURN, AL (WTVM) - Many families are celebrating their high school graduates as ceremonies kick off Thursday night and continue throughout the weekend.
News Leader 9 is saluting some exceptional high school graduates, including a West Point appointee.
Opelika High School Seniors will graduate Friday and one particular student is Winston Smith T, who's earned an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Close to 13,000 students apply each year and fever than 900 are accepted and then appointed.
Smith T's GPA is a 4.2 and he was the school's punter at OHS. He also earned a spot on West Point's football team as well.
"He is an outstanding student because he cares about other people and is very conscientious and he is very educated centered and goal oriented and I just see amazing things from this man in the future," Dr. Farrell Seymore, OHS Principal said.
"Don't sacrifice what you want tomorrow for what you want today, a lot of students need to look at that, you should focus on your goals, not what you want to do now because it could be damaging," Winston T Smith said.
Smith T says his family, teachers and friends helped him focus and stay on track during the two year application process at West Point.
Senator Mike Rogers made the appointment.
