COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Congressman Sanford Bishop and the Black History Month Observance Committee gave out $20,000 to local charities on Monday.
The Black History Month breakfast was in February, but on Monday, the committee distributed checks to the Liberty Theater, the House of Mercy and the Columbus Black History Museum.
The local entities are honored for providing a vital and integral service to the citizens of Columbus.
"To the extent that would continue to help this institution, to continue to help our people in need in this community. We want to do just that and we're happy to do that and today is just an example of our continuing that commitment," Congressman Bishop said.
Each year, proceeds from the breakfast are distributed to different nonprofit organizations.
The congressman presented a check worth $10,000 to the House of Mercy and presented checks of $5,000 to the Black History Museum and to the Liberty Theater.
