Columbus 'Speed Painter' pleads guilty to child cruelty

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) – A nationally-known "speed painter" from Columbus was in court Monday and now knows how long he'll spend in jail.

Derrick Westry, 40, pleaded guilty to second-degree child cruelty.

His attorney Stacey Jackson says the local artist was originally was accused of having sex with a teen girl in 2013, but entered a "best interest" plea to causing the girl physical or mental pain through negligence.

Westry did not admit guilt to any sex act with the victim.

As they agreed, the judge sentenced Westry to three years in the Muscogee County Jail, followed by seven years of probation.

His wife was charged with misdemeanor reckless conduct for not protecting the safety of the girl, who made the sexual allegations to a high school teacher, according to investigators. Jeanee Westry has been sentenced to one year of probation.

Derrick Westry, who calls himself a "legend" and the "world's fastest speed painter," has until Oct. 13 to start serving his jail sentence.

Westry was a contestant on Anderson Cooper's "Anderson's Viewers Got Talent" competition in 2012.
