Lanett Mayor Oscar Crawley laid to rest on Monday

LANETT, AL (WTVM) - The city of Lanett celebrated the life of their mayor and friend Oscar Crawley.

The words "we love our mayor" welcomed family and friends of Mayor Oscar Crawley to Mount Hermon Baptist Church during his funeral on Monday.

Crawley was the first black mayor of Lanett, elected in 2004 and served up until his death on Oct. 6.

"He was passionate and graceful and did it with dignity, lead with integrity and one of the best leaders this city has ever had," Lanett City Council member Stanley Robert said.

Crawley was instrumental in re-opening Lanett's airport, and constructing a Veterans Park.
He was a proud Alabama State University grad and trustee, where he received an honorary doctorate of philosophy.

Crawley was a soft-spoken Southern gentlemen, but under that calm exterior was a passion for the citizens he served. He is survived by his wife, two children and three grandchildren.
