1 dead following officer-involved shooting in Opelika

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) – A male suspect has died following an officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning, according to a press release from the Opelika Police Department.
The shooting on the 400 block of Comanchee Drive on Oct. 31 at approximately 11:50 p.m. The officer was attempting to perform a traffic stop on a 2003 Ford Explorer, when the driver refused to pull over.
Following a short chase, driver stopped at a residence in the 400 block of Comanchee Drive.
The officer was attempting to take the driver into custody when the shooting occurred.
First repsonders arrived and transported the male victim to the East Alabama Medical Center where he died.
The male victim was pronounced dead at 12:32 a.m. on Sunday by the emergency room physician. The victim's name is not being released at this time pending notification of the next of kin.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency was contacted and immediately responded to the scene, and agents from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will conduct the investigation.
The police officer involved is cooperating fully with the SBI Agents.
There are no other details to be released at this time due to the early stages of the investigation. The Opelika Police Department will conduct a press conference on the incident, Monday, Nov. 2 at their offices. A time has not been announced.
The SBI released a statement Sunday morning, saying:
The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting at the request of the Opelika Police Department. The incident, which occurred last night, Oct. 31 in Opelika, appears to have involved an armed subject and Opelika Police. The subject was transported to East Alabama Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. There were no injuries to the officer. Upon completion of the investigation, SBI will forward their findings to the District Attorney for review. Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing.
