LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - A former Lee County Sheriff's Deputy has been arrested and charged with sexual abuse.
On Wednesday, Nov. 18 at approximately 4 p.m. CST, 38-year-old Kevin W. Taylor of Phenix City, AL was taken into custody by agents of the State Bureau of Investigation of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on a charge of Sexual Abuse of a Child less than 12 years old.
Taylor, who was formerly employed as a deputy sheriff with the Lee County Sheriff's Office, was booked into the Lee County Detention facility and posted bond set at $10,000.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones requested the SBI conduct an independent investigation due to Taylor's association with the sheriff's office.
The investigation was initiated as a result of a call the sheriff's office received the morning of Nov. 9.
The victim's mother reported to the responding deputy that she believed her daughter had been inappropriately touched by Taylor, who is an acquaintance of the victim and her family.
The request for the SBI investigation was made immediately upon the filing of the report.
At the time of the report being filed Taylor was employed by the sheriff's office as a deputy sheriff and the offense is alleged to have occurred while Taylor was off duty.
Taylor's employment covered a period of just over seven years. That employment has been terminated. Based on the investigation to date the indications are that this is an isolated incident: however, the investigation is classified as ongoing.
The Criminal Code of Alabama states that a person commits the crime of sexual abuse of a child less than 12 years old if he or she, being 16 years old or older, subjects another person who is less than 12 years old to sexual contact.
Sexual Abuse of a Child less than 12 years old is a class 'B' felony that upon conviction is punishable by a sentence of not more than 20 years or less than two years imprisonment and a fine of not more than $30,000.
This case will be presented to a Lee County Grand Jury after the first of the year.
