FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) – As part of the downsizing of the military, units across the Army are being inactivated with troops being reassigned.
One of those units being inactivated is the First Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment located at Fort Benning.
The 15th Infantry Regiment was activated at the beginning of the Civil War, and in recent years has been deployed four times. The division was transferred to Fort Benning in 1948. Some of the past commanders of the unit include former President Dwight Eisenhower and General George C. Marshal.
The inactivation ceremonies are one of the final steps of preparation for the brigade to begin closing its doors, as it transitions into Task Force 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment.
