U.S. Marshals capture Illinois homicide fugitive in Columbus

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A fugitive wanted in Illinois has been captured in the Columbus, GA area.

U.S. Marshals located and apprehended 33-year-old Dashon Lamar Ward on outstanding warrants from Rockford, IL.

On Feb. 4, the Rockford Police Department obtained arrest warrants for Ward, charging him with First Degree Murder and Armed Habitual Criminal.

The warrants alleged that Ward shot and killed Jason DePena after an argument. Ward had been on the run from the Rockford Police Department when they requested assistance of the U.S. Marshals in Rockford, who then developed information that he had possibly fled to the Columbus area.

U.S. Marshals in Columbus developed further information leading to Ward's location.

At approximately 10:30 a.m.  Deputy U.S. Marshals, Special Deputy U.S. Marshals – Task Force Officers and Muscogee County Sheriffs Deputies located and arrested Ward in the 30th Avenue block of Columbus, GA.

Ward was transported to the Muscogee County Jail, where he will remain until being extradited back to Illinois.

Multiple agencies participated in the manhunt, namely the: U.S. Marshals South-East Regional Fugitive Task Force – Macon Division; Gulf-Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force – Phenix City Division and Muscogee County Sheriff's Office.
