MCSB officials discuss CHS parking, proposed school calendar at meeting

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Following last week's work session, the Muscogee County School Board meet Monday night.

The biggest topic being voted on was the newly proposed calendar. This calendar would lock in a schedule through the end of the 2018 school year and allow parents extra time to plan vacations around the school schedule.

The main reason why the board voted against the proposed calendar was because it would eliminate the week of students got during Thanksgiving week.

"Well we are going to survey our employees as we were directed by the board and we will survey them and give them some options and bring that back to the board as quickly as possible," said Superintendent Dr. David Lewis.

Next on the agenda was addressing the parking situation at Columbus High School.  The new proposition would acquire new land for $250,000 to allow the school board to build a new parking lot.

"So purchasing this additional property will allow us to secure in the neighborhood of 65 to 75 additional spots there contiguous to the campus of Columbus High School," said Dr. Lewis.

Lastly, Shaw High School Principal Daniel Barden will be leaving his position and taking over as Senior Director of Technology Learning and Support.

"He will be working with technology in terms of implementing our technology program throughout our district and assisting with that integration.  From networking insuring we have the organizational structure in place to make sure teachers have what they need to be successful," said Dr. Lewis.

Barden will start his new position at the beginning of the next school year.
