MUSCOGEE COUNTY, GA (WTVM) - A 30-year veteran of the Muscogee County Sheriff's Office has announced she is running for the department's highest position.

Donna Tompkins announced on Thursday that she will be running for Muscogee County Sheriff.

She says law enforcement is under intense public scrutiny now more than ever and we as a community need law enforcement leadership that we can trust.

"There is a lawsuit against the city from the Sheriff of Muscogee County that is at $1.8 million, and that's taxpayer money paying for those things," Tompkins said. "So I would like to see a fiscally responsible sheriff's office and I would do everything in my power to stop the lawsuits because this is taxpayer money."

She will be running in the May 24 Democratic Primary for the position.
